The word you’ll encounter the most when it comes to this domain is Swedex. Swedex is an international test for all non-native speakers of Swedish. You take the test via a specialized institution, the Folkuniversitetet, for levels A2, B1 and B2. Bear in mind that the exam itself varies in format depending on the level you are taking. For example, the A2 and B1 exams consist of five parts:

Reading comprehension,

Vocabulary and grammar proficiency,

Listening exercises,

Writing exercises,

Conversation—oral examination.

Listening exercises,

Writing exercises,

Reading,

Oral exam component.

You can take this exam twice a year, with a break of six months between tests, regardless of the number of attempts. The requirement for a passing grade is 60% on both the written and oral parts of the exam. The certificate obtained after passing the exam is recognized on the entire European territory.

Did you know?

Like its country of birth, the Swedish language has such a good image that one in seven people in Europe would like to be able to speak it. Although it is unique in many ways, it also bears significant similarities with several European languages. If you speak any of the languages below, learning Swedish will be all the more straightforward for you:

German—as much as 40% of words from this language have been adapted to the Swedish-speaking regions through the domains of trade and economy;

English—hailing from the same family; Swedish, along with Norwegian and Danish, is part of the Scandinavian group of languages which in turn belongs to the Germanic family of Indo-European languages, just like English;

French—the connection here is due to historical circumstances, as well as due to Napoleon’s time in the Swedish court;

Danish—the south of the country was under Danish rule until the 17th century;

Norwegian—has influenced the west of Sweden under similar circumstances.

Should you decide to enroll in an online Swedish language course, chances are you will be learning some of the language of Santa Claus and Norse gods, as the recognized languages in this country include not only Swedish but also Finnish, Romani, Meänkieli, Sámi, and Yiddish.
